Malang schools get budget cut
SURABAYA: Cash assistance for eight elementary schools in
Gedangan district, Malang regency, has reportedly been cut by up
to Rp 76 million (US$7,600) by an official at Malang's education
office.
East Java councillor Kuswiyanto said on Friday that a school
principal had reported the reduction to the council.
"The principal of Segaran II elementary school reported that
there is assistance to procure school equipment worth Rp 4.7
million, but it turns out the equipment being delivered is on
loan from another school while the assistance itself should
actually total Rp 24 million," Kurwiyanto said.
When the council looked into the matter, he said it found that
seven other schools had experienced the same cuts. "The funding
is part of direct assistance to improve basic education valued at
Rp 90 million at each school," he said. -- Antara
