MAKI Urges KPK to Thoroughly Probe Public Reports on Handling of Foreign Workers

Indonesian Anti-Corruption Community (MAKI), led by Boyamin Saiman, has urged the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) to be responsive to every public report, including allegations of corruption and gratification in the case of a foreign national with initials TCL. Boyamin emphasised that any information reaching the anti-corruption body should be processed through the legal mechanism via verification and objective data gathering.

‘KPK must follow up on all public reports. Whether they are proven or not, this must go through study and collection of evidence and facts first, to avoid basing on assumptions,’ Boyamin said in a statement on Tuesday (3/3).

Similarly, Dendi Budiman, head of the Association of Justice Youth, urged KPK to expand its investigation to the Directorate General of Immigration. He noted a big anomaly: how could a foreign national live and work in three Indonesian companies for ten years without immigration and employment documents, yet not be deported. He compared this with strict immigration action against tourists in Bali who were deported for working as dancers or surfing instructors.

‘We suspect there is a role or negligence that has escaped attention. We urge KPK to examine the immigration authorities concerning the TCL case. Do not let an administrative loophole be exploited for bribery or gratification,’ he said.

Earlier, protesters from the Association of Justice Youth held a rally outside the Red-and-White building of KPK, Kuningan, South Jakarta, on Wednesday (11/2). They demanded transparency about TCL’s presence who supposedly violates residency permits but remains outside the reach of the law.

‘We believe TCL does not have lawful permission from the relevant ministry. Public transparency of the authorities is needed so the public can have clarity and the space for speculation is closed,’ he added.

In response to these demands, KPK spokesperson Budi Prasetyo stated that the agency would examine every complaint received, including reports involving alleged gratification within Immigration. He emphasised that details of public reports are classified. ‘Regarding public complaints, that information is classified as confidential. In line with the mechanism, we will re-check the contents of the report to process further,’ he said. (E-4)
