The National Food Agency considers Indonesia’s food security to remain strong. The majority of the population’s consumption needs are met by domestic production. Deputy for Food Availability and Stabilisation of Bapanas, I Gusti Ketut Astawa, stated that this condition maintains supply stability amid geopolitical pressures and El Niño threats. “Indonesia’s strategic basic food security is considered strong. This is based on the fact that the majority of the population’s consumption needs are supported by domestic production,” said Ketut. “Based on the Food Balance Sheet Projection data, we have at least 10 commodities produced domestically,” he added. Commodities such as rice, corn, shallots, chillies, broiler chicken meat, broiler eggs, and sugar are projected not to require imports for consumption. Meanwhile, imports still occur for soybeans, garlic, and beef in limited portions. “We only import two or three dominant ones. Soybeans and garlic, then beef but not dominantly,” he said. Initial stocks for 2026 are also substantial, around 12 million tonnes. Bapanas calculations show that end-of-year stocks for 2026 have the potential to increase to 16 million tonnes. This figure comes from an initial stock of 12.4 million tonnes, plus production of 34.7 million tonnes, minus consumption needs of 31.1 million tonnes.
