Majene Prison and Health Office Conduct Hantavirus Prevention Education for Inmates
The Majene Class IIB Detention Centre (Rutan) continues its commitment to safeguarding the health of inmates. In a recent initiative, the facility partnered with the Majene District Health Office (Dinkes) to conduct a socialisation session on Hantavirus prevention within the residential blocks.
This preventive measure aims to enhance early detection and protection against the potential spread of diseases transmitted by rodents, particularly rats. Given the dense environment of the detention centre, education on environmental hygiene has become a top priority.
During the session, the medical team from the Health Office explained that Hantavirus can cause serious respiratory issues, including Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome. Transmission typically occurs through direct contact with infected rat urine, droppings, or saliva, as well as through airborne particles in contaminated areas.
The Health Office stressed the importance of implementing clean and healthy living standards inside the cells. Inmates were urged not to leave food scraps exposed, as these can attract rats into the housing blocks.
The Head of the Majene Detention Centre stated that this collaboration with the Health Office is a form of fulfilling the health rights of the inmates. ‘Health is a priority. Through this socialisation, we hope inmates become more vigilant and independent in maintaining the cleanliness of their rooms,’ he said.
In addition to the educational material, the activity included a sanitation inspection of the kitchen area and drainage systems within the facility. This step was taken to ensure there are no potential points that could become rat nests.
