Mahathir denies aide's plan to quit

KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad
has denied that his top economic adviser Daim Zainuddin plans to
quit and attacked inaccurate news reports, local newspapers said
yesterday.

Mahathir said Daim was neither seeking to resign as Economic
Adviser to the Government nor as treasurer for the ruling United
Malays National Organization (UMNO).

"He himself said that it was not true. The question of him
wanting to resign as Economic Advisor to the Government does not
arise," Mahathir was quoted as saying in northwestern Langkawi
island by the New Straits Times daily.

The daily, as well as its main competitor the Star, had
reported in their Wednesday editions that Daim said he was
looking to resign all political posts to concentrate on private
sector businesses.
