Magnitude 7.2 Earthquake Strikes Sabah, Malaysia, Felt as Far as North Kalimantan
A magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck the Kota Kinabalu region of Sabah, Malaysia on Sunday evening (22 February) at 23:57 Western Indonesian Time (WIB).
The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded the earthquake’s location at 6.94 degrees North Latitude and 116.26 degrees East Longitude.
“The epicentre was located at sea, 109 kilometres northeast of Kota Kinabalu,” stated BMKG on its official X account.
The Kota Kinabalu earthquake had a depth of 628 kilometres. However, its tremors were felt as far as East Kalimantan and North Kalimantan.
The earthquake’s vibrations were felt at MMI II intensity in Tanjung Selor, Malinau, Tarakan, Tenggarong and Samarinda. At MMI II on the Modified Mercalli Intensity scale, the shaking is felt by some people, and light hanging objects may swing.
