JAKARTA - President of the French Republic Emmanuel Macron said Indonesia is a strategic partner for France in the Indo-Pacific region. Macron affirmed both countries’ commitment to strengthening strategic ties into a broader and deeper global partnership amid global geopolitical dynamics. ‘Indonesia is a key strategic partner in the Indo-Pacific, and I believe this is also part of President Prabowo’s conviction,’ Macron said after his bilateral meeting with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto at the Élysée Palace in Paris on Thursday, 28 May 2026.

In defence and security, Macron highlighted the close cooperation between the two nations, marked by the arrival of Indonesia’s first Rafale fighter jets. ‘Yesterday, the first Rafale fighter jet arrived in Indonesia, which is proof of this relationship and today’s discussions. It also demonstrates the willingness to move forward on this path,’ Macron said.

Beyond defence, Macron stressed the importance of strengthening economic, trade, and investment cooperation between Indonesia and France, as well as the European Union. He expressed hope that the comprehensive economic partnership agreement between Indonesia and the EU would be implemented soon to accelerate trade and investment in strategic sectors. ‘It is crucial to implement this agreement swiftly to remove barriers to trade and investment, and to expedite progress in transport, healthcare, energy transition, and defence,’ he added.

Macron praised Indonesia’s opening of its market to French dairy and beef sectors. In culture and education, Macron and Prabowo committed to deepening collaboration. Previously, the two nations signed a joint cultural strategy declaration at Borobudur in May 2025. This collaboration includes museums, literature, film, fashion, and strengthening scientific, technological, and university partnerships during the France-Indonesia Innovation Year 2026. ‘France aims to welcome more students, researchers, and talent,’ he added.
