YOGYAKARTA — The Central Leadership of Muhammadiyah, through its Higher Education, Research and Development Council (Diktilitbang), has officially entered into a strategic collaboration with the Education Fund Management Institution (LPDP) under the RISPRO Invitasi Berkemajuan research funding programme.

The programme aims to drive the downstream application of research outcomes for Muhammadiyah’s charitable enterprises (Amal Usaha Muhammadiyah/AUM) and Indonesian society at large, with a focus on research commercialisation and innovative technology development. With its orientation towards technology and innovation, the programme is expected to bridge university research outputs with industry and public needs.

Total funding for the programme amounts to Rp 20 billion, structured through a pooling fund scheme with balanced contributions of Rp 10 billion from Muhammadiyah and Rp 10 billion from LPDP. This co-financing model reflects a shared commitment to strengthening national research independence and innovation.

Muhammadiyah Central Leadership Chairman Prof. Muhadjir Effendy, speaking at an event held at Muhammadiyah University of Yogyakarta (UMY) on Thursday (19 February), emphasised that the collaboration represents part of Muhammadiyah’s endeavour alongside LPDP to advance research and strengthen the nation’s human resources.

“The immense potential possessed by Indonesia must be supported by targeted and impactful research,” said the former rector of Muhammadiyah University of Malang (UMM).

In a similar vein, Diktilitbang Chairman Bambang Setiaji stressed that the partnership must not stop at the funding aspect alone. “The RISPRO Invitasi Berkemajuan programme must truly produce productive innovations that make a tangible contribution to national progress, particularly for the generation within the Muhammadiyah organisation,” he said.

He affirmed that Muhammadiyah and the public expect this to genuinely become productive innovation research. “This funding must benefit impactful industrial advancement, so that the country’s progress can be truly felt,” he added.

Meanwhile, LPDP Director of Research Facilitation Ayom Widipaminto explained in his report that the research funding is focused on five main themes: food security and agriculture; energy transition, materials and manufacturing; health; engineering and digital technology; and social sciences, economics and humanities.

“Of the 187 proposals received, 26 of the best were selected for funding, with the majority coming from Muhammadiyah and Aisyiyah Higher Education Institutions (PTMA),” he said.

According to Ayom, this demonstrates that research quality within the PTMA environment is strongly competitive and should not be underestimated.

“Through this collaboration, we express our deep appreciation to Muhammadiyah for its commitment and dedication to the development of education and research in the homeland,” he affirmed.

It is hoped that this partnership will serve as an important foundation for realising a progressive Indonesian generation and strengthening the role of research as the bedrock of national development.
