MAUMERE, KOMPAS.com - Rice production in Sikka Regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), remains low. As a result, thousands of tonnes of rice must be supplied from outside the area. Acting Head of the Sikka Regency Agriculture Office, Inosensius Siga, revealed that the average annual unhulled rice production stands at 36,307.2 tonnes. Meanwhile, rice consumption needs are very high. “For consumption alone, we are still short; we must supply from outside,” Inosensius stated in Maumere on Friday (27/3/2026). According to the Sikka Regency Food Security Office, the annual rice requirement in Sikka Regency is estimated at around 37,000 tonnes. He mentioned that the local government is currently reviewing plans to develop 500 hectares of new paddy fields, though realisation depends on several factors. He explained that the proposal, submitted to the central government, requires a survey investigation design (SID) to determine feasibility. Inosensius noted that the primary requirement for paddy field development is the availability of at least 10 hectares of contiguous land. He said that if these requirements are met, new paddy fields can be developed. “The SID results may not necessarily reach 500 hectares. It could be less,” he added. Nevertheless, efforts to increase rice production and productivity continue, including the provision of aid and fertiliser subsidies.
