JAKARTA – The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government is steadily refining plans to implement Low Emission Zones (KRE) as a concrete solution to curb air pollution in the capital. This policy is touted to have a significant impact, particularly in reducing concentrations of harmful pollutants such as PM2.5. The Head of the DKI Jakarta Environmental Agency, Asep Kuswanto, stated that this step is part of the local government’s broader strategy to control air quality in a measurable manner. Asep is optimistic that the data-based policy, implemented gradually, inclusively, and equitably, will bring about real changes to Jakarta’s air quality. “This is the government’s presence in ensuring cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable air quality for Jakarta’s residents,” he said. This approach not only targets the transportation sector but is also integrated with waste management and the adoption of green buildings. A study titled Feasibility Assessment of Low Emission Zone (LEZ) by Breathe Jakarta in 2025 highlights the substantial potential of this policy. Widespread and integrated implementation of KRE is said to be capable of reducing PM2.5 concentrations by up to 30 percent. “Low Emission Zones encourage a shift in urban mobility systems, from private vehicles to public transport and environmentally friendly vehicles. With the right interventions, a significant reduction in air pollution can be observed,” said Fadhil.
