A massive garbage heap at the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Treatment Facility (TPST) in Bekasi collapsed, claiming four lives. The four victims were identified as S (60), a coffee vendor at the location; E.W. (26), a waste picker; D.S. (22), a truck driver from Semper Barat, Cilincing, North Jakarta; and I.S. (40), also a truck driver, according to Bekasi Metro Police Chief Senior Commissioner Kusumo on Monday 9 March 2026.

In addition to the fatalities, two truck drivers, J and R, were reported safe during the incident.

The landslide occurred on Sunday 8 March at approximately 14:00 Western Indonesia Time at the DKI Jakarta TPST Zone 4C, RT 004 RW 004, Cikiwul Village, Bantargebang District. The collapsing waste buried several truck drivers, a coffee stall, and numerous waste trucks in operation.

A security control officer at the TPST initially discovered the disaster after hearing residents’ shouts warning of the landslide. He witnessed the enormous garbage mound suddenly collapse, blocking the access road and burying the coffee stall and several waste trucks.

Following the incident, information was immediately distributed through the TPST security communication network, prompting personnel to rush to the scene.

Officers from Bantargebang Police Substation who received the initial report proceeded directly to the incident site to conduct inspections, document victims, and assist in evacuation operations. Search and rescue efforts continue using heavy equipment including excavators.

The evacuation operation involved multiple agencies, including the Armed Forces and National Police, the Bekasi and DKI Jakarta Disaster Management Agencies, the Bekasi Search and Rescue Agency, the Environmental Health Service, the Bekasi Fire Department, the Red Cross, volunteers, and officials from Bantargebang District and Sumur Batu Village.

The Metro Jaya Police Chief Inspector General Asep Edi Suheri and Deputy Metro Jaya Police Chief Dekananto Eko Purwono visited the site to review evacuation operations and ensure victim assistance was maximised. Both directed combined personnel to focus on locating victims believed to remain buried beneath the waste.

Material losses from the incident remain under assessment by authorities. Police are conducting further investigations into the disaster.
