List of European Countries with the Highest Wages, Exceeding Tens of Millions
Wage disparities in Europe remain stark. Western European countries dominate the list with the highest wages, while Eastern Europe lags far behind. However, high nominal wages do not necessarily reflect better welfare levels, as differences in living costs are the primary determinant of workers’ purchasing power. The latest data shows Luxembourg as the country with the highest minimum wage in Europe, reaching more than €2,704 per month or approximately Rp52.8 million (exchange rate Rp19,533/€). This position is followed by Ireland, the Netherlands, and Germany, which also record wages above €2,000 or equivalent to more than Rp39 million per month. On the other hand, countries like Ukraine and several Balkan regions remain below €500 or around Rp9.7 million per month, reflecting significant economic disparities between regions. This phenomenon confirms the existence of a structural divide between Western and Eastern Europe. The more economically advanced Western region tends to offer higher wages, supported by strong productivity and industrial structures. In contrast, countries in the Eastern region still face challenges in raising wage standards alongside lower levels of economic development. On the other hand, not all European countries set a national minimum wage. Countries like Denmark, Sweden, and Finland rely on collective bargaining mechanisms between workers and companies. This model is considered more flexible but still able to maintain worker welfare levels through sectoral agreements. Minimum Wage in Indonesia As a comparison, the minimum wage in Indonesia remains far below that of European countries. In Jakarta, for example, the Provincial Minimum Wage (UMP) for 2026 is around Rp5.7 million per month, or equivalent to about €292 (exchange rate Rp19,533/€). This figure still lags far behind Western European countries with minimum wages above €2,000 per month. Nevertheless, compared to countries with the lowest wages in Europe like Ukraine (€164 per month), Indonesia’s wage level is still relatively higher.
