List of Conglomerates Owning Jakarta's Largest Shopping Malls
Jakarta has numerous shopping malls spread across almost every corner of the city. The shopping centres in total represent nearly a quarter of Indonesia’s 400 malls nationwide, with approximately 96 malls in Jakarta alone.
These malls offer more than just shopping facilities. They also feature restaurants, cinemas, entertainment centres, and hotels, making them popular tourist destinations where visitors can engage in multiple activities in one location.
Of the 96 malls in Jakarta, South Jakarta is the area with the highest concentration of shopping centres at 28 units. Other areas have 22 malls in Central Jakarta, 18 in North Jakarta, 16 in West Jakarta, and 12 in East Jakarta.
Many of these malls are owned by domestic conglomerates. Here is the list:
- Trihatma Kusuma Haliman
Trihatma is the owner of PT Agung Podomoro Land Tbk (Agung Podomoro Group), which has developed several major shopping malls in Jakarta including Senayan City, Thamrin City, and Central Park. According to the Indonesian Shopping Centre Entrepreneurs Association (APPBI), Central Park is the largest mall with an area of 188,077 square metres and a retail space of 125,626 square metres.
Agung Podomoro Land released 149 ownership certificates for housing units in Central Park in 2022 to PT CPM Assets Indonesia, representing 85% of the property. Senayan City, which has operated since 2006, is known as the most fully-equipped shopping mall in Jakarta, located in the Asia Afrika Street area of Central Jakarta, adjacent to a television station and apartment complex.
- Sutjipto Nagaria
He is the owner of Summarecon Agung Tbk, which operates Summarecon Mall Kelapa Gading. According to APPBI, this mall is the second largest in Jakarta with an area of 150,000 square metres and an estimated 600 tenants.
- Eka Tjandranegara
The owner of Mulia Group is the proprietor of Mal Taman Anggrek. This mall has been operating for 30 years with a total area of 360,000 square metres and a parking capacity of 4,000 spaces.
The mall is renowned for being the first to provide an ice skating arena in Indonesia. It also features a giant LED display measuring 353.4 metres long and 25 metres high, which is described as “The World’s Largest LED Illuminated Façade”.
- Robert Budi Hartono and Michael Bambang Hartono
Grand Indonesia, located in Central Jakarta, is owned by two brothers who rank among Indonesia’s wealthiest individuals. The mall is connected to office buildings in Menara BCA, Hotel Indonesia Kempinski, and the Kempinski Private Residences apartment complex.
The structure covers a substantial area of 141,472 square metres. The mall consists of two sections called West Mall and East Mall, connected by a sky bridge.
- Tan Kian
Pacific Place, a shopping mall in the Central Business District area, is owned by Tan Kian through his business empire, Dua Mutiara Group.
The mall adopts a mixed-use concept, comprising One Pacific Place Office, The Ritz-Carlton Hotel, and The Ritz-Carlton Residence.
- PT Senayan Trikarya Sempana
This company, as stated on its LinkedIn profile, develops and manages the Senayan Square area, including Plaza Senayan shopping mall.
PT Senayan Trikarya Sempana is a joint venture between Kajima Overseas Asia Pte. Ltd and the Gelora Bung Karno Management Authority. The mall covers an area of 130,500 square metres.
- Alexander Tedja
Tedja, owner of a business group, also owns several malls in Jakarta, including Blok M Plaza, Mal Kota Kasablanka (Kokas), and Mal Gandaria City.
Mal Kota Kasablanka in the Casablanca area is considered one of Jakarta’s largest shopping malls.
- Murdaya Poo
Murdaya Poo is the owner of PT Metropolitana Kentjana Tbk, which developed Pondok Indah Mall (PIM). This shopping centre was one of the first malls built in Jakarta, opening in 1991.
The development of PIM set a trend for shopping mall construction in other parts of Jakarta. Since its establishment 35 years ago, PIM comprises three mall buildings named PIM 1, PIM 2, and PIM 3.
