Jakarta (ANTARA) - Passenger car sales in Indonesia throughout the first quarter of 2026 (January–March) still demonstrate a strong dominance by Japanese brands, but several new players are beginning to attract attention, particularly from Chinese manufacturers. According to retail data from the Indonesian Automotive Industry Association (Gaikindo), accessed on Tuesday, total sales reached 211,905 units in the first quarter or the first three months of the year. The top position is still held by Toyota with total sales of 64,416 units and a market share of 30.4 per cent. Toyota’s monthly sales were recorded at 22,066 units in January, 22,812 units in February, and 19,538 units in March. In second place, its sister company under the same umbrella, Daihatsu, recorded 34,653 units with a 16.4 per cent share, followed by Suzuki in third place with 19,026 units (9 per cent). Mitsubishi Motors is in fourth place with 18,469 units sold (8.7 per cent), while Honda completes the top five with sales of 13,001 units (6.1 per cent). Interestingly, the Chinese electric vehicle brand BYD has successfully broken into the top six with a total of 10,265 units and a 4.8 per cent share, indicating a trend of increasing interest in electrified vehicles. Jaecoo, a Chinese manufacturer under the Chery group that entered Indonesia just five months ago, has already recorded 7,927 units (3.7 per cent), placing it in seventh position, surpassing Hyundai with 4,824 units (2.3 per cent). The top 10 best-selling passenger car brands in the first quarter of this year are also highlighted by Wuling, which managed to sell 3,643 units (1.7 per cent), and Chery with 3,433 units (1.6 per cent). Several premium brands such as BMW (644 units), Lexus (258 units), and Mercedes-Benz PC (242 units) continue to maintain their niche markets, although their contribution to the total volume is relatively small. Meanwhile, several brands that have not been long in the Indonesian market, such as VinFast (601 units), Jetour (591 units), and Xpeng (434 units), are beginning to show their presence in the domestic market. Overall, the passenger car market in the first quarter of 2026 is still dominated by Japanese brands, but the presence of Chinese brands, especially in the electrification segment, serves as a strong signal of changing competitive dynamics ahead.
