LIPI awards two researchers
JAKARTA: The Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) has made an award to two of its researchers, Setijati Sastrapradja and Danny Hilman Natawidjaja, on Monday in observance of the institute's 38th anniversary that falls on Aug. 23.
The Sarwono Prawirohardjo award was conferred by LIPI head Umar Anggara Jenie in Jakarta. Sarwono was the first head of the institute.
Umar said Setijadi and Danny were given the awards for their outstanding contributions in developing sciences in the field of biology and geology respectively.
Setijati was considered to have played a key role in promoting the concept of developing a provincial mini park that emphasizes the significance of managing popular and unique species from local areas.
He was also among the initiators of the signing of the Convention on Biological Diversity during the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Jainero, Brasil.
Danny had meanwhile managed to obtain data on the cycles of major earthquakes that took place during more than 300 years by researching the growth patterns of coral reefs. --Antara
