Liliek Prisbawono Adi has just been inaugurated by President Prabowo Subianto as a Constitutional Court (MK) judge. Liliek emphasised that no special tasks have been assigned to him.

Liliek was inaugurated after a lengthy process. Liliek, along with two other judges—Fahmiron, the High Court Judge of the Denpasar High Court, and Marsudin Nainggolan, the Chief Judge of the North Kalimantan High Court—were selected as MK judge candidates on the recommendation of the Supreme Court (MA).

Liliek, Fahmiron, and Marsudin were selected based on the selection process by the selection committee (pansel). The pansel was chaired by Suharto, the Deputy Chief Justice of the MA for Judicial Affairs.

Of the three candidate names for MK judges, Liliek was the one inaugurated as an MK judge. Liliek’s position replaces Constitutional Court Justice Anwar Usman, who has entered retirement.

Liliek’s inauguration took place at the State Palace. There, he took the oath, pledging to fulfil his duties as a constitutional judge well and fairly, while adhering firmly to the 1945 Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia.

Liliek’s Remarks After Inauguration

After being inaugurated, Liliek expressed his thanks. He said he feels happy and proud to have been selected to replace Anwar Usman.

“I have been inaugurated as a constitutional judge to replace His Honour Prof Dr Anwar Usman, which is a source of pride and happiness, and of course, thanks to my institution,” said Liliek.

To Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Sunarto, Liliek also expressed his gratitude for the trust given to him to hold this position.

“I ask for your prayers, of course this is a struggle for me to always enhance my integrity and capacity as a constitutional judge. Once again, thank you. Please pray for me to carry out my duties and responsibilities in safeguarding the constitution in the Republic of Indonesia,” he stated.

No Special Tasks

Liliek said there are no special tasks entrusted to him moving forward. Liliek stated that he is only replacing Anwar Usman’s position as an MK judge.

“Specifically, no special tasks have been conveyed to me. So I am just in the position of replacing Mr Anwar Usman, Prof Anwar Usman, who has served as a constitutional judge for 15 years,” he said.

The homework to be done going forward, according to Liliek, is to safeguard the constitution. Liliek said he will prioritise statesmanship.

“Of course, safeguarding the Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia is the first priority, and statesmanship will be our guiding principle as constitutional judges,” he added.

Anwar Usman’s Hopes

Anwar Usman, who was present at his successor’s inauguration, has high hopes for Liliek. He hopes Liliek will bring blessings to the MK.

“Yes, hopefully he brings wisdom and blessings to the Constitutional Court and for the nation and state,” said Anwar Usman.

Anwar Usman said there are no specific issues for Liliek to pay particular attention to. According to Anwar, Liliek can work as a constitutional judge in accordance with his institution’s authority.

“No, just resolving cases related to the constitutional mandate. Article 24C is clear on the MK’s authority: to adjudicate and decide cases related to laws. Then, to adjudicate or decide cases related to disputes between state institutions. Thirdly, the dissolution of political parties, and fourthly, the resolution of election result disputes. Those are the main ones,” he said.
