President Prabowo Subianto witnessed the oath-taking of Liliek Prisbawono Adi as a justice of the Constitutional Court. Through the appointment held at the State Palace in Jakarta, Liliek officially replaced the previous justice, Anwar Usman, who has entered retirement.

Liliek was sworn in using the Quran. He stated that he would fulfil the duties of a Constitutional Court justice well and fairly. “Upholding the 1945 Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia firmly, and implementing all laws and regulations as straight as possible,” said Liliek during the oath on Friday, 10 April 2026.

The appointment of Liliek Prisbawono Adi as a Constitutional Court justice is based on Presidential Decree of the Republic of Indonesia Number 36P of 2026 regarding the Dismissal and Appointment of Constitutional Court Justices, proposed by the Supreme Court (MA). After the swearing-in, Liliek and President Prabowo signed the minutes of the event.

In addition to the Constitutional Court justice’s oath, President Prabowo also inaugurated other officials, namely Andi Rahadian as Indonesia’s Ambassador to the Sultanate of Oman and the Republic of Yemen. Prabowo also witnessed the oath-taking of nine members of the Indonesian Ombudsman for the 2026-2031 period.

Before becoming a constitutional justice, Liliek served as a high court judge at the Medan High Court since 19 April 2024. According to the Medan High Court website, Liliek has a long track record in the general judiciary environment.

Before serving as a high court judge at the Medan High Court, Liliek had served as Chair of the Balikpapan District Court. After that, he was appointed as Deputy Chair of the South Jakarta District Court, before being inaugurated as Chair of the Class 1A Special Central Jakarta District Court in 2022.

Anwar Usman previously gave a farewell address in a hearing held on Monday, 16 March 2026. He bid farewell for retirement just before reading the decision in case Number 176/PUU-XXIII/2025.

The brother-in-law of the 7th President Joko Widodo said that today’s decision hearing was the last one he would attend. “Before I read the decision, this might be the last hearing for me to join, because on 6 April I will have completed 15 years of service at the Constitutional Court,” he said in the Plenary Meeting Room of the MK, Jakarta.

Anwar admitted that during his time as a constitutional justice, he was not free from making mistakes. Therefore, before entering retirement, Anwar apologised to all parties for his mistakes during his tenure as a constitutional justice. “From the deepest part of my heart, I convey my apologies,” he said.

Anwar Usman was appointed as a constitutional justice on the proposal of the Supreme Court since 6 April 2011. He then continued his position as a constitutional justice for a second period in 2016 and served as Deputy Chair of the MK.

On 2 April 2018, Anwar was elected as Chair of the MK, replacing Arief Hidayat, for a term until 2020. He was then elected to that position for a second period, namely the 2023-2028 term, before finally being removed from that position due to proven ethical violations.

Anwar was then deemed involved in a conflict of interest in deciding case Number 90/PUU-XXI/2023 regarding the age requirements for presidential and vice-presidential candidates, known as the 90 Decision.

That decision was said to pave the way for President Jokowi’s son, who is also his nephew, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, to run as a vice-presidential candidate in the 2024 presidential election. However, Gibran, who was 36 years old at the time, did not meet the minimum age requirement for candidacy set at 40 years.
