Life sentence sought for drug dealer

TANGERANG: Prosecutor DJ. S. Simamora demanded Tangerang District court on Monday to sentence defendant Muksin, a drug dealer, to life imprisonment for possessing and trafficking 60 kilograms of marijuana in Cisauk subdistrict of Serpong on Nov. 9, 2001.

Simamora had earlier charged the defendant for violating Article 82 Law No. 22/1997 on drug trafficking. The article carries a maximum sentence of the death penalty.

A team of detectives of the Tangerang City Police nabbed Muksin at his house after receiving information from community members. The evidence was found wrapped in 13 computer CPU boxes.

The defendant was not accompanied by a defense lawyer at the trial while the Article of the Criminal Code Procedure stipulates that the court must provide a lawyer for a defendant who might face more than five years of prison term.

Presiding judge Warsito adjourned the session until next Monday when the defendant will read out his personal defense. -- JP
