Life Insurance Under Pressure as Pension Funds Become Industry Mainstay
Jakarta — The Financial Services Authority (OJK) has recorded the performance of Indonesia’s insurance, guarantee, and pension fund (PPDP) industry remaining stable in early 2026, bolstered by solvency ratios significantly above minimum thresholds. However, beneath this stability lies a pronounced divergence in performance between life insurance and pension fund segments.
Ogi Prastomiyono, Executive Head of Insurance, Guarantee and Pension Fund Supervision at OJK, reported that total industry insurance assets reached Rp 1.214 trillion in January 2026, growing 5.96% year-on-year. Commercial insurance assets specifically reached Rp 995.19 trillion, up 7.48% year-on-year.
From a capitalisation perspective, the industry remains exceptionally strong. Life insurance Risk Based Capital (RBC) stood at 478.06%, whilst general insurance reached 333%, both considerably exceeding the regulatory minimum threshold of 120%.
Nevertheless, premium performance shows a marked contrast. Accumulated commercial insurance premium income reached Rp 36.38 trillion, growing 4.67% year-on-year. However, this growth was entirely driven by general insurance and reinsurance, which surged 17.92% year-on-year to Rp 18.42 trillion.
Life insurance premiums, by contrast, contracted 6.15% year-on-year to Rp 17.97 trillion.
This life insurance contraction occurs despite robust solvency conditions, indicating pressure stems primarily from demand or product sales rather than capital adequacy.
In contrast, the pension fund industry demonstrated significant acceleration. Pension fund assets reached Rp 1.686 trillion in January 2026, expanding 11.21% year-on-year, substantially outpacing insurance industry asset growth.
For voluntary pension programmes, assets grew 7.6% year-on-year to Rp 412 trillion. Mandatory programmes, including the Old Age Guarantee (JHT) and Civil Servant/Police Old Age Savings (THT) schemes, recorded assets of Rp 1.273 trillion, increasing 12.42% year-on-year.
