Deputy Chair of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) Lestari Moerdijat has called for strengthened inclusive education through improved teacher skills as a step towards delivering quality educational services for all children, including those with special needs.

“To realise quality educational services for every citizen, efforts to increase the number of teachers capable of educating children with special needs must be realised immediately,” said Lestari Moerdijat in a written statement on Monday, 16 March 2026.

According to data from the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education (Kemendikdasmen) as of September 2025, there are 363,921 disabled students across Indonesia. Of this number, 199,375 students study in 60,910 inclusive education delivery units (SPPI).

However, only approximately 15% of total SPPI have specialist guidance teachers (GPK). This condition is seen as hampering the creation of equitable educational services for all citizens.

Lestari, commonly known as Rerie, emphasised that consistent government effort to increase the number of GPK is greatly needed. She supports the government’s plan to provide training for teachers this year so they can develop the capacity to support children with special needs.

The member of Commission X of the House of Representatives also requested the central government, regional governments, and communities to work together to support the acceleration of this programme’s realisation.

“Synergy from all parties is greatly needed so that fair and equitable inclusive educational services for every citizen can be realised soon,” concluded the member of the Higher Assembly of the NasDem Party.

The need for a learning environment that not only accommodates but also embraces diversity is becoming increasingly pressing. Lestari Moerdijat stated that the fulfilment of the rights of children with special needs and disabilities must be continually intensified across various aspects of life, including education.

The Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education through the Directorate General of Vocational Education, Special Education, and Special Services Education reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening inclusive education services.

Banten Governor Andra Soni reiterated that the development of inclusive education is an important step to ensure justice for all society.
