Lenteng Agung JPO Lift Out of Order and Neglected, Forcing Users to Climb 62 Steps
The lift at the pedestrian overpass (JPO) in front of the Institut Ilmu Sosial dan Ilmu Politik (IISIP), Lenteng Agung, South Jakarta, is not functioning. Observations at the site on Monday (6/4/2026) showed that the lift on the side from Lenteng Agung Station towards Tanjung Barat Station is closed, with a notice on the door stating that the lift is under repair. Meanwhile, the lift on the opposite side is still operating normally and can be used by residents. However, there are scribbles on the door at the top of the JPO leading to the lift. With a span of about 65 metres and a width of two metres, the bridge is equipped with two facing lifts as supporting access for pedestrians. The stair access at each end consists of 62 steps, with two quite high resting points, requiring extra effort from users. The majority of JPO users are students, schoolchildren, and local residents who are active in the surrounding area. When the lift is not functioning, vulnerable groups such as the elderly, pregnant women, and people with certain physical conditions must rely on the stairs. This situation has the potential to cause difficulties, reduce comfort, and disrupt the accessibility of public facilities that should facilitate residents’ mobility. Climbing dozens of steps is no easy task. Panting breaths, profuse sweat, and the onset of fatigue were felt when Kompas.com tried climbing the stairs manually. Two resting points, specifically at steps 16 and 48, provide the only opportunities to catch one’s breath before reaching the top at step 62. “I pass through here almost every day, and the lift from Lenteng Agung to Tanjung Barat has been unusable for quite a while,” said Yanu when met at the stair area. According to Yanu, this damage is not a sudden issue but has been left unattended for a long time without repairs.
