Legislators in T. Priok case

JAKARTA (JP): The Attorney General's Office will summon four legislators as witnesses in connection with the 1984 incident in Tanjung Priok, North Jakarta, a prosecutor said on Thursday.

Secretary of the investigation team Umar Bawazier said that the legislators were expected to appear next week. They are deputy speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR) A.M. Fatwa, regional representative in the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) Arief Biki, and Jakarta City Council members Syarifin Maloko and Abdul Qadir Djailani.

"The summonses are being prepared," Umar was quoted by Antara as saying to journalists at his office.

Investigators have questioned 22 out of the 59 witnesses recommended by the findings of an inquiry conducted by the National Commission on Human Rights.

The clash between the military and residents in Tanjung Priok erupted following the delivery of allegedly provocative sermons by preachers, who criticized the government and demanded the release of several residents detained by the military.(bby)
