Legislator urges Rachman to quit

JAKARTA: An Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI Perjuangan) legislator urged Attorney General M.A. Rachman on Friday to resign following the decision of the Public Servants' Wealth Audit Commission (KPKPN) to report him to the police over his wealth declaration.

Teras Narang, who is also chairman of the House of Representatives' Commission II on legal and home affairs, said that it would be prudent for Rachman to step aside.

"For the sake of the judicial system, it would be better for Rachman to step down," Teras told reporters after a party meeting.

Rachman was reported to police by the KPKPN for concealing his wealth and giving conflicting statements regarding a number of bank accounts in his name.

Rachman said earlier that he was ready to quit his position if found guilty.

Teras Narang said the PDI Perjuangan would urge President Megawati Soekarnoputri to replace Rachman as soon as possible.

Megawati, who is also the PDI Perjuangan's chairwoman, had said earlier that she would not replace Rachman, arguing that replacing him would not guarantee better law enforcement. --JP
