Legal certainty and police
Legal certainty and police
From Kompas
The nation's antigraft struggle has achieved little since being launched eight years ago. Legal certainty has never materialized and is now even worse than before the reform era.
Security in the New Order era, despite military intervention and occasional human rights abuses, was able to bring a certain amount of peace and fairness to society. Now with the police handling security, a coalition of hoodlums and rich people benefits at the expense of justice and tranquility.
In my village in Pati, Central Java, for instance, public officials involved in criminal activities are never brought to court and their cases are shelved by the local police, despite the presence of witnesses and evidence.
Such facts reduce public confidence in the police.
