Lebaran Return Flow Still High, Train Occupancy Reaches 123.8%
PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) recorded that the return flow of the 2026 Lebaran transport period is still intense. As of 29 March 2026 at 10:00 WIB, based on booking data, at least 202,279 long-distance train passengers will travel today, with temporary occupancy reaching 123.8% and potential for further increases.
Vice President Corporate Communication of KAI, Anne Purba, stated that the dynamics of this year’s Lebaran travel show increasingly dispersed mobility patterns. Since mid-March, the volume of long-distance train passengers has continued to rise.
“And currently, we are still in the return flow phase. Trains remain the choice due to fixed schedules and comfort during the journey,” she said in an official statement on Sunday (29/3).
Cumulatively, as of 29 March 2026 at 10:00 WIB, ticket sales reached 4,808,151 tickets out of a total capacity of 4,498,696 seats, or 106.9%. Details show long-distance trains recorded 4,048,682 passengers or 113.4% of the 3,571,760 seat capacity. Meanwhile, local trains served 759,469 passengers or 81.9% of the 926,936 seat capacity.
During the period from 11 to 28 March 2026, KAI has served 4,215,419 passengers, consisting of 3,521,946 long-distance train passengers and 693,473 local train passengers. The volume increase occurred gradually since the start of the Lebaran transport period and peaked during the return flow phase.
Anne added that occupancy above 100 percent is a characteristic of train operations. “In one train journey, passengers board and alight at various stations, so one seat can be used by more than one passenger on different routes,” she explained.
KAI urges the public to consider alternative schedules and routes that are still available. Additionally, the Silaturahmi Promo offers a 20 percent discount on executive class tickets for the period from 25 March to 1 April 2026.
Several trains with high booking rates during the Lebaran period include KA Joglosemarkerto, KA Airlangga, KA Sri Tanjung, KA Bengawan, KA Kahuripan, KA Rajabasa, and KA Jayakarta.
“Passenger movements at stations open up seat availability opportunities. Journeys can still be planned flexibly,” Anne concluded.
KA Putri Deli has become the primary choice for the public with a total of 4,479 tickets sold for six available trips. Cumulatively, during the 22-day 2026 Lebaran transport period, KAI Divre I Sumut has distributed 186,861 tickets.
