JAKARTA – The cost of Lebaran homecoming in 2026 is a major concern for many travellers. They admit to having to dig deep into their pockets, from Rp 4 million to Rp 10 million, to cover various needs during their trip back to their hometowns.

These expenses include transportation costs, purchases of souvenirs, and the tradition of sharing Eid allowances (THR) with family.

One traveller heading to Tegal, Abdul Rohman (53), said his total homecoming expenses this year amount to around Rp 4 million. This covers return train tickets, souvenirs, and cash to be given to his nephews.

According to Abdul, the tradition of sharing THR is one factor that requires him to prepare extra funds during homecoming. However, he does not mind because the moment only happens once a year.

“Usually, I bring extra money. For sharing with the family, we only meet once a year,” said Abdul Rohman.

To anticipate unexpected expenses, Abdul also prepares a reserve fund collected gradually from his monthly income.

“I still have savings, so the money I’ve prepared (Rp 4 million) – if it’s short, I’ll use additional funds,” said Abdul Rohman.

Something similar was shared by Ardi (55), a Jakarta resident returning to Surabaya. He estimates his total homecoming expenses at Rp 6 million, mainly because he is travelling with his wife and child.

“If alone, it might be more economical, but this time with wife and child. Plane tickets are expensive, not to mention THR for the extended family – that’s Rp 6 million gone, that’s the initial estimate. Sometimes it’s uncertain, it could be more,” said Ardi.

“Besides for the village, the money is also used for outings with the family, and buying souvenirs for family still in Jakarta,” said Ardi.

He added that based on last year’s experience, total homecoming expenses could be much higher than the initial estimate.

“Looking at last year, I spent up to Rp 10 million. Because there are many needs, from tickets, THR, to outings and buying souvenirs. It could be around that this year (Rp 10 million),” said Ardi.

This phenomenon shows that homecoming costs are not only influenced by transportation prices but also by Lebaran traditions and family activities during their stay in the hometown.
