The Lebaran homecoming period in 2026 is predicted not to be entirely clear. BMKG warns of the potential for heavy rain, strong winds, and extreme weather in several regions of Indonesia, urging the public to remain vigilant.

In its official statement, BMKG notes that global and regional atmospheric dynamics remain quite active, influenced by the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) as well as equatorial waves such as Kelvin and Rossby. These conditions increase the potential for rain cloud formation, particularly in central to eastern Indonesia.

“The potential for rain cloud growth and convective activity is expected to be more dominant in central to eastern Indonesia,” BMKG states.

During the period of 12–15 March 2026, light to heavy rain was recorded in several areas. The highest rainfall occurred in Central Sulawesi at 90 mm per day, Aceh at 85 mm per day, North Sumatra at 84.2 mm per day, and South Papua at 82.9 mm per day.

Meanwhile, hot weather was also observed in some regions. Maximum temperatures reached 37.2 degrees Celsius in West Java, and above 35 degrees Celsius in East Java, Kalimantan, and Banten. BMKG explains that this is triggered by reduced cloud cover in parts of western Indonesia.

Entering the period of 17–20 March 2026, light to moderate rain is expected to dominate most of Indonesia. However, moderate to heavy rain is possible in several regions, including West Java, Central Java, East Java, Bali, Nusa Tenggara, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, and Papua.

BMKG has also issued an early warning in the alert category for potential heavy to very heavy rain in areas such as Central Java, East Java, East Nusa Tenggara, East Kalimantan, South Sulawesi, as well as Central Papua and surrounding areas.

In addition to rain, strong winds are possible in West Nusa Tenggara, Sulawesi, Maluku, and Papua.

For the period of 21–23 March 2026, the weather pattern is predicted to be relatively similar. Light to moderate rain will remain dominant, with potential heavy rain in several central and eastern Indonesian regions.

BMKG reminds that fluctuating weather conditions could disrupt smooth homecoming travel, whether by land, sea, or air.

“Heavy rain that may be accompanied by lightning or thunder and strong winds has the potential to disrupt travel during the Lebaran homecoming period,” BMKG states.

The public is urged to increase vigilance against potential hydrometeorological disasters, such as floods, landslides, and puddles, especially in vulnerable areas. Additionally, people are advised to continuously monitor the latest weather information through BMKG’s official channels, including the website, InfoBMKG app, and social media.

With weather that can change at any time, thorough travel planning is key to ensuring a safe and comfortable homecoming.
