Learning from Freeport! Prabowo Speaks Out on US Investment Rules in Indonesia
President Prabowo Subianto has emphasised that Indonesia remains widely open to investment cooperation with the United States. However, this openness has limits. He stressed that all forms of incoming investment must remain within the framework of national interests, particularly in the management of natural resources that are the nation’s strategic assets. In the context of discussions on tariff agreements with the US, Prabowo assured that the government will not sacrifice the basic principles of national economic management. Market Price Becomes Key to Mineral Management Prabowo’s main focus is on the management of critical minerals, which are now a globally strategic commodity. He affirmed that Indonesia is open to anyone wishing to participate, as long as they follow fair and transparent pricing mechanisms. Learning from Freeport Prabowo also mentioned that foreign involvement in the mining sector is not new to Indonesia. One concrete example is Freeport Indonesia, which has been operating for decades and is one of the largest contributors to national revenue. “We allowed them to mine in Freeport. It’s been decades. Freeport now generates one of our largest revenues. We permitted it,” he continued. This experience serves as proof that collaboration with foreign parties can bring significant benefits, as long as it remains under national control and regulations.
