Lava floods in Magelang

SEMARANG, Central Java (JP): Lava washed down from the Merapi
volcano, sweeping Magelang and burying three trucks in a sand
quarry on Thursday, a press report said yesterday.

Mas Atje Purbawinata, head of government agency monitoring the
mountain's activities, said the lava slide occurred following
heavy rain on Thursday evening.

"I have repeatedly warned local people of possible lava slides
during the rainy season," Antara reported him as saying.

He said there was no casualties.

He said Mount Merapi, which erupted and killed more than 20
people in November, is still highly active. The agency recorded
20 tremors between 00.00 to 6.00 a.m. yesterday. (rms)
