Lauded Moment as UAE President Tours Dubai Mall Amid Regional Tensions
Dubai Mall visit by UAE President amid rising regional tensions
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - The President of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, together with Dubai’s Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, visited Dubai Mall on Monday evening local time. Media reports said the visit took place as regional tensions escalated over the conflict between Iran, the United States and Israel.
The two leaders were seen walking through the mall area, greeting visitors, speaking with residents and posing for photographs. They were also seen drinking coffee and sharing a meal with their delegation, just hours after sunset for Ramadan.
The event quickly spread on social media and was interpreted as a message of calm and national resilience as the UAE’s air defence system actively intercepted drone and missile strikes from Iran. The UAE is home to a US military base and has diplomatic ties with Israel.
The regional conflict had intensified since attacks by the United States and Israel on Iran at the end of the previous weekend, which Tehran retaliated with strikes at several points in the Gulf region. The UAE has been indirectly affected, with air defences shooting down hundreds of projectiles.
Although most threats were repelled, debris from interceptions reportedly caused fires and damage at several locations, including hotels on Palm Jumeirah, the Burj Al Arab, and the Jebel Ali port area.
Lauded visit
The UAE President’s appearance in public drew widespread praise. Yemen Online described the move as ‘unprecedented’, given how rarely heads of state appear publicly amid military tensions.
One video circulating on Instagram shows the two leaders drinking coffee in the mall with the caption: ‘Having coffee at Dubai Mall while the region discusses tensions. That is how you reassure a nation.’
Positive responses flooded in. Some social media users urged their leaders to do the same.
‘TSeeing how the UAE protects its people makes us hopeful that our country would do the same,’ wrote one social media user.
‘This is true leadership, present and visible to the people,’ added another.
If tarming it. Ramadan breaking of fast together
Meanwhile in Abu Dhabi, UAE Vice President Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed hosted a Ramadan iftar and an open reception at the Emirates Palace. This underscored the government’s effort to maintain social stability.
The government is said to want citizens to continue their daily activities as much as possible, while continuing to monitor security developments. Authorities are also considering reopening schools after closures and a shift to remote learning.
The private sector has been given leeway to decide on remote work or returning to offices as the regional situation remains dynamic.
