A fatal accident involving the Argo Bromo Anggrek train on the Gambir-Surabaya Pasar Turi route and a commuter line (KRL) train bound for Cikarang occurred at Bekasi Timur Station on Monday evening, 27 April 2026. Dozens of people died in the train accident.

The collision in Bekasi began when the KRL was stationary on track 1 at Bekasi Timur Station. The train had stopped due to a disruption ahead, namely a collision between another train and a taxi.

The Argo Bromo Anggrek train then appeared shortly afterwards from behind and rammed into the stationary KRL body at the station. The collision caused the Commuter Line carriage, particularly the women-only section, to crumple.

Here are the facts of the incident up to Wednesday, 29 April 2026:

Number of Fatalities: 15 People

Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY) stated that the number of fatalities in the train accident at Bekasi Timur Station has risen to 15 people. “The update as of 1 p.m. today shows 15 people have passed away and 88 others are still receiving treatment,” said AHY during his inspection of the site on Tuesday, 28 April 2026.

AHY explained that a joint team has evacuated all victims previously trapped inside the carriages, including three victims who were pinned and are now receiving hospital care. “It can be said that everyone has been successfully evacuated and removed from the impacted carriage from last night,” he said.

According to AHY, the current focus of handling is not only on the evacuation process but also on victim recovery and normalisation of the affected rail lines. He stated that the process of lifting the damaged train carriages is ongoing, including the KRL carriage directly impacted in the accident.

Basarnas Halts Victim Search

The National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) halted the search for victims of the accident between the Argo Bromo Anggrek train and the KRL at Bekasi Timur Station on Tuesday, 28 April 2026. Basarnas Chief Air Marshal TNI Mohammad Syafii said the search operation was closed at 08:00 WIB after all evacuation processes were completed. “At 08:00 it was finished, and all our SAR teams have been returned to their respective bases,” Syafii said at Bekasi Timur Station on Tuesday.

According to Syafii, the SAR team completed the search and evacuation process in less than 12 hours since the incident occurred. During the process, the SAR team provided special handling for several victims pinned inside the train carriages. “There were five victims in pinned conditions that required extrication,” said Syafii.

All Fatalities Are Adult Women

Vice President of Corporate Communications for PT KAI Anne Purba stated that all the fatalities were women. According to her, the victims were productive-age women who were either students or workers.

In addition to the fatalities, Anne mentioned that 84 other passengers have been taken to various hospitals for medical treatment. Anne said PT KAI is still identifying the deceased victims.

Government Seeks Clarification from Taxi Company

The Directorate General of Land Transportation under the Ministry of Transportation (Kemenhub) has summoned the management of Xanh SM taxi or Green SM on Tuesday, 28 April 2026. The summons was to seek clarification following the accident between the Cikarang KRL and the Argo Bromo Anggrek train at Bekasi Timur Station the previous day.

“We have formed a special team to delve into the involvement of the Xanh SM taxi, including its licensing, administrative completeness, fulfilment of safety standards, and compliance with public transport operational regulations,” said Director General of Land Transportation Aan Suhanan in an official statement on Tuesday, 28 April 2026.

He explained that public safety is the top priority, so any potential violations will be addressed according to regulations. Based on data from the Siprajab application, the vehicle involved in the accident with licence plate B 2864 SBX is registered and has a valid supervision card until 28 October 2026.

The vehicle is also registered to serve regular taxis in the Jabodetabek area. Nevertheless, the Directorate General of Land Transportation will continue to investigate further to ensure the operator’s compliance with all applicable regulations.

Police Examine Taxi Driver

Police are examining the driver of the Green SM online electric taxi in connection with the accident between the Argo Bromo Anggrek train and the KRL at Bekasi Timur Station. The taxi driver has been secured and is being questioned at the Bekasi City Metro Police Resort.

“The driver has been secured at the Bekasi City Metro Police Resort for further investigation by the Head of Traffic Police,” said Head of the Traffic Accident Data Collection, Processing, and Analysis Section of the National Police Traffic Corps, Commissioner Police Sandhi Wiedyanoe, in a written statement on Tuesday, 28 April 2026.

Sandhi explained that the chain of accidents began due to an electrical short circuit in the online electric taxi vehicle at a level crossing without barriers. The short-circuited electric vehicle was then hit by the KRL from the Cikarang to Jakarta direction, leading to the subsequent chain of accidents.

House of Representatives Chair Spotlights PT KAI

House of Representatives Chair Puan Maharani has urged the government to evaluate the rail line safety system following the collision incident. According to Puan, safety at rail crossings that are still below standard often causes accidents.

“We ask the government, PT KAI, and related stakeholders to prioritise rail safety issues more. The rail line system and security must be improved,” said Puan in a written statement on Tuesday, 28 April 2026.

In addition, Puan encouraged the investigation that will uncover the cause of the accident to produce clear structural lessons. So that ultimately, the evaluation can provide assurance to the public that the KRL is a safe, rational transport option.
