Latest Condition of Toddler Found Bound with Duct Tape in Bantul
The Yogyakarta Special Region Women and Children Protection Task Force has monitored the condition of the child whose hands, feet and mouth were taped up inside a rented room in Pleret, Bantul. The child is reportedly in good condition and currently being cared for by her grandmother in Patuk, Gunungkidul. “The Gunungkidul UPTD PPA has visited the grandmother’s place in Patuk, or the father’s parents. As of this morning, the little one’s condition is fine,” said Yogyakarta PPA Task Force Coordinator Yekti Utami to reporters in Piyungan, Bantul, on Thursday (4/6/2026). Yekti also stated that her team will provide intensive support to the victim. “Yes, it will remain intensive. That is why this morning the Gunungkidul Regency UPTD went straight to the grandmother’s house to provide assistance and check on the child’s condition,” she said. The task force is also coordinating with the Bantul Regency PPA UPTD to prevent a similar incident from recurring. As previously reported, the toddler girl was found alone and bound with duct tape in a rented room in the Kedaton area of Pleret, Bantul. The infant was left behind by her mother, who is suspected of experiencing mental health issues. The son of the lodging house owner and witness, Mamat, recounted that one of the tenants saw the child’s mother leaving on a motorbike on Monday afternoon (1/6). The mother lived with her three-year-old child, while her husband works in Jakarta and rarely returns home. “According to the neighbouring tenant, the mother left by motorbike without taking her child. After maghrib, the neighbour heard a faint crying sound from the child,” he said on Wednesday (3/6). A tenant who repeatedly heard a child crying from the next room contacted Mamat, who then visited the rented room around 9:00 PM local time. After knocking with no answer, Mamat used a crowbar to pry open the window. A slender neighbour entered the room and discovered the child in a distressing state, wearing only clothes and a nappy, with her hands, feet and mouth bound with clear duct tape. Mamat noted that a small gap in the tape over her mouth allowed the child to cry, and that the air conditioner and fan were pointed directly at her. Residents then removed the child and unwrapped the tape before reporting the incident to the neighbourhood chief and the police.
