Day-long rainfall across the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) triggered landslides at numerous locations and damaged several facilities on Monday (16 February).

According to reports from the DIY Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) operations centre, moderate to heavy rainfall fell almost uniformly across the entire province from Sunday (15 February) evening through Monday.

Based on the BPBD report issued at midnight on Tuesday (17 February), the extreme weather caused a series of incidents, including injuries classified as minor.

In the City of Yogyakarta, landslides and extreme weather were reported at seven locations across four sub-districts: Kraton, Ngampilan, Gondokusuman and Mergangsan. The damage included four damaged houses, one sub-district office, one motor vehicle, one bamboo grove and one river channel obstruction.

“Four people sustained minor injuries and 16 residents were displaced,” the BPBD operations centre reported on Tuesday.

In Sleman Regency, 25 locations across seven sub-districts were affected by landslides and extreme weather, including Sleman, Depok, Ngemplak, Ngaglik, Pakem, Prambanan and Gamping. The damage comprised eight houses, two government facilities, one Islamic boarding school, one livestock pen, two road access points, one electricity network point, one internet network point, one billboard, twelve fallen trees and one directional sign.

In Bantul Regency, a landslide was reported in Kasihan Sub-district, damaging the Gunung Sempu Training and Education Centre and one house.

In Gunungkidul Regency, landslides and extreme weather struck seven locations across six sub-districts: Wonosari, Karangmojo, Tepus, Patuk, Ponjong and Panggang. The damage included three fallen trees, eight damaged houses, two houses at risk, one bridge, two electricity network points, two collapsed retaining walls, one bathroom, one livestock pen, two internet network points, four road access points and two river channels.

“Estimated losses stand at Rp21 million,” the report stated.

Finally, landslides and extreme weather were reported at 19 locations across eight sub-districts in Kulon Progo Regency, including Kokap, Nanggulan, Pengasih, Girimulyo, Samigaluh, Kalibawang, Panjatan and Sentolo. The damage comprised one fallen tree, eight houses, one electricity network point, eleven road access points, one internet network point and one irrigation channel.
