Landslide closes Trenggalek–Ponorogo national road completely
Trenggalek, East Java (ANTARA) - A sizeable rock triggered a landslide, completely blocking the Trenggalek–Ponorogo national road at Km 16, in Nglinggis Village, Tugu District, Trenggalek Regency, East Java, on Tuesday around 17:30 local time (WIB).
Stefanus Triadi Atmono, Acting Head of BPBD (Regional Disaster Management Agency) of Trenggalek Regency, said the landslide occurred after heavy rain accompanied by strong winds had drenched the area since the afternoon.
“Earlier there was heavy rain and strong winds. Debris from the landslide and a large rock then fell onto the carriageway. There were no vehicles passing at the time,” he said.
Based on an initial assessment by BPBD shared via the official social media account, a cliff around 50 metres high had landslided, with rock material leaping over a concrete barrier and falling directly onto the road’s central lane.
BPBD confirmed no fatalities in the incident. However the Trenggalek–Ponorogo national road access is temporarily closed entirely because the large rock cannot be moved manually.
Several motorists intending to pass had to turn back and seek alternative routes.
Officials and related agencies have installed barriers and secured the site to prevent vehicles from approaching the danger zone.
“The ground is still unstable and there is potential for secondary landslides. We are continuing with further assessments and awaiting heavy machinery and rock breakers for the evacuation process,” Stefanus said.
BPBD urged communities and road users to temporarily avoid this route until cleaning is completed and the condition is declared safe.
