Lamongan Regent Proposes Weather Modification Operation to Accelerate Flood Mitigation Efforts
Lamongan, East Java — The Regent of Lamongan, Yuhronur Efendi, has proposed implementing weather modification operations to accelerate efforts to address flooding that continues to affect dozens of villages in the region.
The proposal was submitted during an audience with the East Java Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) and Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) at the BMKG Juanda office in Surabaya.
“We are proposing that weather modification operations be conducted in Lamongan, particularly in areas with significant water inundation, so that conditions improve rapidly and residents can resume their activities,” the regent stated in Lamongan on Wednesday.
He explained that flooding in Lamongan has persisted for approximately four months and has affected 44 villages across five districts. In several locations, water levels continue to rise.
Meanwhile, the Head of the East Java BMKG, Taufiq Hermawan, announced that weather modification operations are planned to commence on 16 March 2026 as part of hydrometeorological disaster mitigation efforts.
He added that the implementation of weather modification will take into account atmospheric dynamics that are continuously monitored by BMKG. Should conditions permit, the operation can be conducted in the Lamongan region to help reduce rainfall intensity.
The East Java BPBD and BMKG have also emphasised the importance of accurate weather information as the basis for determining appropriate disaster anticipation and response measures.
