Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has revealed that the 2026 dry season will be longer, arrive earlier, and trigger drier conditions. Not only that, BMKG confirms that La Niña has ended. ‘The weak La Niña that has been in place since October 2025 ended in February 2026,’ said BMKG Chief Teuku Faisal Fathani in a press conference broadcast on BMKG’s YouTube channel, on Wednesday, 4 March 2026. ‘The initial comparison for the onset of the dry season across most of Indonesia indicates it will arrive earlier or sooner. That is in 325 Seasonal Zones (ZOM) or 46.5% of the total Seasonal Zones,’ added Faisal. However, he continued, the onset of the dry season in around 173 ZOM in Indonesia or 23.7% is forecast to be the same as last year. Faisal outlined that most of Indonesia is forecast to enter the dry season in April 2026, namely 114 ZOM or about 16.3% of the 699 ZOM nationwide. Meanwhile, areas entering the dry season in May 2026 amount to 144 ZOM or 20.6% of ZOM, and in June 2026 there are 163 ZOM or 23.3% of the total Indonesian area. ‘It will start from the Nusa Tenggara region, then move westward, gradually to the other parts of Indonesia,’ Faisal explained. Regarding the nature of the 2026 dry season, he explained that rainfall accumulation in 451 ZOM or 64.5% of all Indonesian ZOM is predicted to fall into the below-normal category or be drier than usual. ‘The peak of the dry season across most of Indonesia, or in 429 Seasonal Zones or 61.4% of the total, is forecast to occur in August 2026,’ said Faisal. ‘If we compare the dry-season peak, across most of Indonesia it is predicted to occur earlier or sooner. That is in 410 Seasonal Zones or 58.7% of the total Seasonal Zones in Indonesia. The forecast onset remains the same in 142 Seasonal Zones,’ he added.
