Kupang Prison Raid Uncovers Cutters and Speakers
Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT) Regional Task Force of the Directorate General of Corrections (Ditjenpas), alongside law enforcement agencies, conducted a joint raid at Kupang Class IIA Prison on Monday, 25 May 2026.
The raid was led by Head of Services and Rehabilitation Division Ratri Handoyo E. Saputro, accompanied by Head of General Affairs and Administration Cipto Edy, Head of Community Guidance Mahendra Sulaksana, and other regional office staff. The operation also involved a team from Old Town Police Station under Police Chief Arifin.
Ratri Handoyo stated the joint raid reflects the corrections department’s commitment to maintaining security and ensuring effective rehabilitation processes.
He explained the operation was a follow-up to the 15 Ministerial Action Programmes and directives from the Director General of Corrections regarding strengthened early detection of security and order disturbances.
“Searches were conducted thoroughly across Blocks A to D and the Narcotics Block. Officers inspected inmates’ rooms humanely but firmly to prevent prohibited items and potential security threats,” he said.
Ratri noted that items found included glass, lighters, nails, iron rulers, metal spoons, glass cups, cutters, and speakers.
“All seized items were immediately destroyed to prevent misuse that could compromise prison security,” Ratri Handoyo stated on Monday, 25 May 2026.
He added that the raid was not solely focused on contraband but also a preventive measure to ensure a secure, orderly, and conducive environment for inmate rehabilitation.
“This operation aims to eliminate potential security threats that could harm both the public and inmates,” Ratri explained.
Ratri stated the joint raid is part of NTT Ditjenpas Regional Office’s commitment to building a clean, secure, and rehabilitation-focused corrections system.
“The operation also helps prevent drug trafficking and planned criminal activities within the prison, enabling inmates to undergo optimal rehabilitation before reintegration into society,” he added.
