KSP: Government targets starting construction of five WtE sites in June 2026
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Presidential Chief of Staff Muhammad Qodari stated that the government targets starting the construction of Waste-to-Energy (WtE) facilities, marked by groundbreaking ceremonies in June 2026.
In a press conference at the Presidential Staff Office (KSP) in Jakarta on Wednesday, Muhammad Qodari explained that the government is targeting the development of WtE facilities in 30 agglomeration areas spread across 61 districts and cities throughout Indonesia.
“Five locations are targeted for groundbreaking in June 2026, namely in Bekasi City, Yogyakarta City, Greater Bogor, and Greater Denpasar. The four locations above are implementations of Presidential Regulation 109/2025,” Qodari clarified.
He referred to Presidential Regulation (Perpres) Number 109 of 2025 on Urban Waste Management through Waste Processing into Renewable Energy Based on Environmentally Friendly Technology and Perpres Number 35 of 2018 on Accelerating the Development of Waste-to-Energy Facilities Based on Environmentally Friendly Technology.
For Phase II, the tendering process by Danantara will begin in the second semester of this year for 12 locations. The target waste input capacity can reach more than 1,000 tonnes per location, so the total WtE processing capacity can reach 33,000 tonnes per day.
“Moreover, what is important in the current situation is that the existence of WtE can drive technology transfer and the transition from fossil energy. From an environmental aspect, WtE can contribute to improving public health by reducing the risk of environment-based diseases, especially in areas around landfills,” he said.
Previously, Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs Zulkifli Hasan stated that the WtE project must be completed within seven weeks as part of efforts to accelerate waste management issues in Indonesia.
“Because this is a direct order from Mr. (President Prabowo Subianto). If it’s not completed in seven weeks, then we (the central government) will have to take over. That’s the order,” Zulhas said in Jakarta on Tuesday (21/4).
