KRL Fares Set to Increase to Rp 3,500, KCI Explains Reasons
JAKARTA — PT Kereta Commuter Indonesia (KCI) is currently reviewing plans to increase KRL commuter rail fares.
One of the key considerations is to reduce the subsidy burden currently borne by the government. KCI Director Mochamad Purnomosidi stated that the proposal is still in the internal discussion stage and has not yet become a final decision.
“The intention is to find ways to reduce the subsidy,” Purnomosidi said at KCI Hall in Central Jakarta on Monday (9 March 2026). “We are exploring various solutions, including priority KRL services.”
“If fares increase, it might only be Rp 500,” he added.
Under this scenario, the base KRL fare could increase from Rp 3,000 to Rp 3,500 for the first 25 kilometres of travel.
However, Purnomosidi emphasised that any decision to raise fares would not be made hastily. In addition to still being under review, the policy must also receive approval from the Ministry of Transportation.
“We cannot decide this alone. We definitely need approval from the ministry, as this is a subsidised railway service,” he said.
Currently, the government provides subsidies to keep KRL fares affordable for the public. The current scheme is Rp 3,000 for the first 25 kilometres, then Rp 1,000 for each additional 10 kilometres.
Purnomosidi explained that the proposed priority KRL service would have faster travel times compared to regular KRL services. The priority service would not stop at all stations, but only at stations with high passenger volumes.
