Kramat Jati intensifies waste segregation awareness campaign through community forums
JAKARTA (ANTARA) - Kramat Jati Subdistrict continues to intensify waste segregation awareness campaigns at the source, i.e. households, to raise public awareness through community forums. ‘We continue to conduct awareness campaigns on the importance of waste segregation at the household level through existing community activities,’ said Kramat Jati Subdistrict Head Kamal Alatas when contacted by ANTARA in Jakarta on Monday. According to him, a community-based approach is the main strategy to ensure waste management messages are more readily accepted by the public. Various community activities used for awareness campaigns include RT/RW coordination meetings, Village Consultative Body (LMK) gatherings, PKK activities, Dasawisma, and mosquito larva monitoring officers (Jumantik). Education is also delivered through the Community Early Warning Forum (FKDM), Karang Taruna meetings, and face-to-face awareness sessions at the village office. Other community activities within neighbourhoods also serve as channels for waste management information dissemination. At each opportunity, residents are educated on the importance of segregating organic and inorganic waste at the household level. Despite ongoing awareness campaigns, the subdistrict government acknowledges several on-ground challenges. A key obstacle is the public’s habit of mixing waste in a single bin, which is difficult to change quickly. ‘Some residents’ understanding of the importance of waste segregation remains limited, and public awareness for consistent segregation needs to be further improved,’ Kamal said. Technical support limitations, such as insufficient segregated waste bins and organic waste processing machines, also hinder programme optimisation. Therefore, sustained support is needed for the waste management system to operate more effectively. Kamal hopes that through intensified awareness campaigns and adequate facility support, waste segregation at the source will become deeply ingrained in the community and a daily habit for residents. The East Jakarta City Government (Pemkot Jaktim) is promoting waste segregation at the source, i.e. households, to reduce the burden on the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Management Facility (TPST) in Bekasi, West Java. Pemkot Jaktim has collaborated with the Ciracas Plastic Recycling Centre (PDUP) to manage inorganic waste. Additionally, the Waste Bank Task Force (Satgas Bank Sampah) in each village, established via Mayor’s Circular No. e-0005/SE/2026, is being optimised in its role.
