JAKARTA — The President Director of PT Krakatau Steel (Persero) Tbk (KRAS), Akbar Djohan, has been re-elected to lead the Indonesian Iron & Steel Industry Association (IISIA) for the 2026–2030 period. He targets the Indonesian steel industry to compete in global markets with a stronger ecosystem.

Akbar emphasised that strengthening the steel industry from upstream to downstream is key. Transformation is also directed through the Blue-Green Industry concept, which combines digitalisation and sustainability.

“We are determined to make IISIA an inclusive and solid home for all national steel industry players, from upstream to downstream sectors. Our focus for 2026-2030 is to build a strong national foundation through strengthening solidarity among members and enhancing competitiveness on the international stage,” said Akbar in his statement in Jakarta on Monday (13/4/2026).

Although national steel production has grown at an average of 14 per cent per year, industry utilisation remains at 52.7 per cent. Pressure also comes from import dumping practices that disrupt the domestic market.

To this end, PT Krakatau Steel (Persero) Tbk (KRAS) together with IISIA is strengthening synergy with the government through the implementation of mandatory SNI. This step is to keep the domestic market competitive.

“The steel industry is the backbone of national development. Through strengthening downstream processing and high-value-added products, we will not only succeed in our own country but also become a respected player in the international market,” said Akbar.

Through his leadership in IISIA, the integration of the steel industry from upstream to downstream will be accelerated. The goal is to ensure a steady supply of steel for infrastructure and manufacturing needs.

Akbar also highlighted two main focuses: asset optimisation and technological transformation. This strategy is aimed at reducing reliance on imported raw materials while strengthening industry efficiency.

“Digital transformation in production processes and strengthening the domestic supply chain is key to making our steel industry efficient and highly competitive in export markets,” said Akbar.

Akbar’s inauguration took place in Jakarta on Friday (10/4/2026) and was led by the Minister of Industry, Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita. The government views IISIA as a strategic partner in strengthening the national steel industry.

Agus noted that the basic metal industry subsector grew by 15.71 per cent in 2025. Indonesia now ranks 13th in the world for steel production with 19 million tonnes.
