Jakarta (ANTARA) - KPPU Commissioner Gopera Panggabean has welcomed the proposal to revise Law No. 5 of 1999 on the Prohibition of Monopolistic Practices and Unfair Business Competition to address the dynamics of the digital economy.

“If calculated, Law No. 5 of 1999 was enacted about 27 years ago, while business developments, especially in the digital sector, have progressed very rapidly,” said Gopera in his statement in Jakarta on Wednesday.

He assessed that the KPPU requires more relevant and up-to-date legal instruments to handle business competition issues, particularly those involving digital platforms and e-commerce.

“The KPPU, as a business competition supervisory agency, needs stronger and more adaptive legal tools to optimally resolve business disputes,” he stated.

In the meeting, Chozin highlighted the challenges of digital platform dominance that could create winner-takes-all conditions, where control of data by large companies can become a barrier to entry for local business actors.

He emphasised the importance of transparency and equal opportunities (level playing field) for all business actors, especially in the e-commerce logistics sector.

Gopera stated that this input aligns with the efforts that the KPPU is currently advocating to the legislature to update business competition regulations.

Besides policy advocacy, AAKLESIA continues to enhance its members’ competence through the E-commerce Logistics Advocate & Consultant Certification programme. This step is a continuation of digital legal literacy that has been initiated through the book “Dynamics of Courier & Expedition Law in the E-Commerce Era” by Dr. Wagiman, S.H., M.H., which has received wide appreciation at the ASEAN level.

“AAKLESIA strives to be a bridge between justice values and modern economic dynamics to support Indonesia as a fair investment destination,” said Chozin.
