The Indonesian Competition Commission (KPPU) is pushing for the acceleration of amendments to Law No. 5 of 1999 on Business Competition and institutional strengthening during an audience with Indonesia’s 7th President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) in Solo on Wednesday (22/4/2026).

The approximately one-hour meeting served as a momentum for KPPU to emphasise the urgency of regulatory reforms amid economic dynamics, including in strategic sectors such as natural gas and construction.

During the audience, KPPU Chairman M Fanshurullah Asa, along with members Gopprera Panggabean and Eugenia Mardanugraha, also expressed appreciation for the issuance of Presidential Regulation (PP) No. 100 of 2024.

The regulation, signed on 10 September 2024, is seen as an initial step in transforming the civil service at the KPPU Secretariat while strengthening institutional capacity to be more adaptive in carrying out business competition oversight functions.

In addition, KPPU exchanged views with Jokowi on strategies to enhance the effectiveness of business competition, which directly impacts economic efficiency and consumer protection.

“The existence of KPPU is important in reminding large business actors to prioritise efficiency in their operations. KPPU must always be bold, because it faces large business actors who are sometimes protected by regulations or policies,” he stated in a press release received by Kompas.com on Wednesday (22/4/2026).

He also expressed support for the planned third amendment to Law No. 5 of 1999 to address modern economic challenges, including digital economy developments. Strengthening KPPU’s institutions is seen as aligned with international practices.

Meanwhile, the KPPU Chairman emphasised that enhancing the agency’s authority is necessary, including in providing advice and considerations to the government on policies that impact national efficiency and the strengthening of state-owned enterprises (BUMN).

The meeting reaffirmed KPPU’s commitment to continuously promoting healthy business competition as a foundation for enhancing national competitiveness and societal welfare.
