The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has announced that Yaqut Cholil Qoumas (YCQ), the suspect in the hajj quota corruption case, is being processed for return to state detention (rutan). The KPK had previously released the Minister of Religious Affairs from 2020-2024 ahead of Eid al-Fitr 2026.

“Today, Monday, 23 March 2026, the KPK is carrying out the process of changing the type of detention for suspect YCQ in the alleged criminal corruption case of the hajj quota, namely from house arrest back to KPK detention,” said KPK Spokesperson Budi Prasetyo to journalists in Jakarta on Monday (24/3/2026).

Budi said the KPK would continue to inform the public about the progress of Gus Yaqut’s transfer. “We convey our thanks to all Indonesian people who continue to monitor and support the KPK in handling this case. We will keep updating the developments,” he said.

According to Budi, Gus Yaqut must undergo a health examination at the Kramatjati Police Hospital before being returned to detention. “For now, the health examination by the doctor is still ongoing at the Raden Said Sukanto Level I Bhayangkara Hospital (RS Polri), East Jakarta,” he said.

Therefore, Budi asked Indonesian people to monitor the results of Gus Yaqut’s health test before KPK investigators transfer Yaqut’s detention from house arrest back to rutan. “We all wait for the results of this health test together,” he said.

Meanwhile, former KPK investigator Praswad Nugraha is concerned about the impact of changing Gus Yaqut’s detention status from rutan inmate to house arrest. He suspects that Yaqut’s actions could be imitated by other KPK detainees.

This is an event that has never happened throughout the history of the KPK. “This house arrest precedent is very dangerous for the future of corruption eradication,” Praswad told Republika on Monday.

According to Praswad, this odd practice also opens up grey areas in the standards of law enforcement that the KPK has strictly maintained. He predicts that in the future, the KPK could open up space for house arrest status for other detainees.

“Will the KPK also approve it if other KPK detainees apply for house arrest? If not, then the KPK has the potential to violate the principle of equality before the law, which is the main foundation of the rule of law,” said Praswad.

He also stated that Yaqut’s house arrest status poses dangers from an investigation technical perspective. Praswad suspects that house arrest provides space for Yaqut to consolidate power, arrange strategies, and seek interventions from external parties to escape legal snares.

“This condition poses a serious risk of disrupting the independence of the legal process and weakening proof efforts,” said Praswad.
