KPK Signals Summons of Former Religious Affairs Minister Yaqut Today, Immediate Detention?
The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has signalled it will summon former Minister of Religious Affairs Yaqut Cholil Qoumas, a suspect in the hajj quota corruption case, on Thursday, 12 March 2026.
“Wait until the end of the week, yes. Thursday is part of the end of the week, isn’t it?” said Asep Guntur Rahayu, Deputy for Investigation and Execution at the KPK, to reporters on Wednesday, 11 March 2026.
Asep stated that the KPK had issued a summons to Yaqut the previous week.
“When will he be summoned? The summons was issued last week for this week,” he said.
When asked whether the KPK would immediately detain Yaqut, Asep indicated that numerous requirements would need to be satisfied first.
“There are formal and material requirements, as well as subjective and objective conditions and other matters related to detention. So, we shall wait and see,” he said.
Previously, on 9 August 2025, the KPK announced it had begun investigating alleged corruption in the determination of hajj quotas and the management of hajj worship at the Religious Affairs Ministry in 2023-2024.
On 11 August 2025, the KPK announced preliminary calculations of state losses in the case had reached over Rp1 trillion and prevented three individuals from travelling abroad for six months ahead.
Those prevented from travelling were Yaqut, Ishfah Abidal Aziz, also known as Gus Alex, Yaqut’s staff member, and Fuad Hasan Masyhur, owner of the Maktour hajj organisation bureau.
On 9 January 2026, the KPK announced two of the three individuals prevented from travelling had become suspects in the alleged hajj quota corruption case: Yaqut Cholil Qoumas (YCQ) and Ishfah Abidal Aziz (IAA).
However, Yaqut filed a pre-trial motion challenging his status as a suspect with the Jakarta South District Court on 10 February 2026, registered under case number 19/Pid.Pra/2026/PN JKT.SEL.
On 19 February 2026, the KPK announced the travel ban extension applied only to Yaqut and Gus Alex, whilst Fuad’s ban was not extended.
On 27 February 2026, the KPK announced it had received an audit from the State Audit Board (BPK RI) regarding state financial losses resulting from the hajj quota case. Subsequently, on 4 March 2026, the KPK announced state financial losses from the case had reached Rp622 billion.
On 11 March 2026, a panel of judges at Jakarta South District Court rejected Yaqut’s pre-trial motion.
