JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has revealed the reasons behind the proposal to limit the tenure of political party general chairmen to a maximum of two terms, as outlined in a study by the KPK’s Directorate of Monitoring on political party governance.

KPK spokesperson Budi Prasetyo stated that the proposal emerged after receiving input and views from various political party cadres regarding the KPK’s findings on the absence of an integrated cadre development system standard.

“Of course, because the study involved many elements, including colleagues from political parties who also provided suggestions and input in efforts to improve the political system in Indonesia,” said KPK spokesperson Budi Prasetyo at the Merah Putih Building, Jakarta, on Thursday (23/4/2026).

Budi explained that the study involved several political party cadres, so the proposal does not come from a single perspective.

Budi revealed that the KPK examined political party cadre development processes because they remain vulnerable to corruption offences.

He alluded to the corruption case involving the inactive Regent of Ponorogo, Sugiri Sancoko, which allegedly involved parties acting as political financiers.

“Thus, through this study, we hope that costs can be reduced,” he said.

Previously, several political parties responded negatively to the KPK’s proposal regarding limiting the tenure of political party general chairmen to two terms.

The KPK proposal is contained in the 2025 report of the Directorate of Monitoring on political party governance, which found that there is no standard for an integrated cadre development system.

Based on these findings, the KPK recommends that the tenure of political party general chairmen be limited to a maximum of two terms.

“To ensure the implementation of cadre development, regulations are needed to limit the leadership of the party general chairman to a maximum of two terms,” stated the Directorate of Monitoring of the KPK on Wednesday (22/4/2026).

“Whether two, three terms or forever, that is the decision of each political party. That is the right of the political party, so it cannot be interfered with,” said NasDem Party General Treasurer Ahmad Sahroni when contacted on Wednesday (22/4/2026).

He stated that all mechanisms, processes, and dynamics related to leadership in the party are internal matters.
