The Oversight Council of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has stated that it is following up on several public reports regarding the transfer of detention status for suspect Yaqut Cholil Qoumas in the alleged hajj quota corruption case some time ago. KPK Oversight Council Chairman Gusrizal said the handling of these reports is being carried out in accordance with applicable procedures and operational provisions. He also appreciated the public’s participation in overseeing the law enforcement process at the KPK.

“We greatly appreciate the role of the public in monitoring the course of law enforcement at the KPK,” he said in a statement in Jakarta on Wednesday.

Gusrizal explained that public reports began to be received from 25 March 2026. These complaints question the legal basis and ethical considerations behind the decision to change Yaqut’s detention status from state detention centre (rutan) to house arrest. He added that every incoming report has been received and disposed since 30 March 2026 for immediate follow-up.

The KPK Oversight Council, he continued, is committed to continuing to carry out its oversight function optimally, including monitoring every stage of the hajj quota case handling, particularly from the ethical and behavioural aspects of KPK personnel to prevent abuse of authority. Therefore, the public is expected to remain active in providing oversight and constructive input to the anti-corruption agency.

According to Gusrizal, the KPK’s independence and integrity can only be maintained if the check and balance mechanism between the institution’s internal mechanisms and the public runs well to uphold justice.

Previously, on 9 August 2025, the KPK began investigating alleged corruption related to Indonesia’s hajj quota for 2023-2024. On 9 January 2026, the KPK named Yaqut Cholil Qoumas and Ishfah Abidal Aziz alias Gus Alex as suspects in the case. Meanwhile, Fuad Hasan Masyhur, owner of the Maktour hajj travel agency, was not named as a suspect, although he was once prevented from leaving the country.

On 27 February 2026, the KPK received the audit results from the Financial Audit Board (BPK) of the Republic of Indonesia regarding state losses in the case, which were then announced on 4 March 2026 to amount to Rp622 billion.

Subsequently, on 12 March 2026, Yaqut was detained at the KPK’s Red White Building Branch Detention Centre, followed by the detention of Gus Alex on 17 March 2026 at the KPK’s Anti-Corruption Education Centre Branch Detention Centre.

On the same day, Yaqut’s family submitted a request to change his detention status to house arrest, which was granted by the KPK on 19 March 2026. However, on 23 March 2026, the KPK stated that it was processing the return of the detention status, and the next day, 24 March 2026, Yaqut was returned to KPK detention.

Finally, on 30 March 2026, the KPK named two new suspects, namely Ismail Adham as Operational Director of Maktour, and Asrul Aziz Taba as General Chairman of Kesthuri.
