The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) states that the enforcement of laws against violations related to general elections at national and regional levels is not yet running optimally. “The enforcement of laws on election violations is also assessed as not yet running optimally,” said KPK Spokesperson Budi Prasetyo to journalists in Jakarta on Saturday. Budi conveyed this statement after the KPK’s study found indications of bribery towards election organisers intended to manipulate electoral results. “In addition, there are still gaps in the recruitment and selection process of election organisers, which could potentially produce non-integritous organisers,” he said. Previously, the KPK’s Monitoring Directorate in 2025 conducted a study to identify corruption potentials among election organisers. After the study, the KPK proposed five points for improvement in election administration, hoped to minimise corruption potential. First, the KPK encourages strengthening the integrity of election organisers through improvements in selection mechanisms, process transparency, and public involvement in tracking records. This effort can also be supported by optimising the Political Party Information System (SIPOL). Second, restructuring the party political nomination process, including minimum membership requirements and the elimination of provisions that open room for elite intervention in candidates. Third, reform of campaign financing, including regulation of campaign methods and types as well as restrictions on the use of cash. Fourth, the gradual implementation of electronic voting and vote tabulation in national and regional elections. Fifth, strengthening election law enforcement by clarifying norms, expanding legal subjects to every person as giver and receiver, and aligning regulations for legislative and regional head elections.
