KPK: Detention of Noel Ebenezer Under Court Authority
The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has stated that the detention of former Deputy Minister of Manpower Immanuel Ebenezer, the defendant in an alleged extortion and/or gratification case, is currently under the authority of the court. This statement was issued by the KPK in response to Noel’s intention to submit a request to transfer his detention to house arrest. “Since the case was handed over to the District Court, the legal responsibility for detention has shifted from the Public Prosecutor to the Judge,” said KPK Spokesperson Budi Prasetyo when contacted via written message on Wednesday (25/3). Previously, Noel’s family had expressed plans to apply for a transfer of detention to the panel of judges at the Corruption Crimes Court (Tipikor) at the Central Jakarta District Court (PN). “Such a plan (to submit a request for transfer of detention). As soon as the holiday is over,” said Noel’s Legal Advisor, Aziz Yanuar, when contacted on Monday (23/3). “Noel indeed needs inpatient treatment because the doctor in the last examination recommended a medical procedure such as a minor surgery and requires intensive care. In addition, it is also to commemorate Easter,” he continued. This plan follows the approach taken by former Minister of Religious Affairs Yaqut Cholil Qoumas, a suspect in the alleged corruption case of the 2023-2024 hajj quota, who was temporarily released from detention to celebrate Eid at home. Yaqut’s family sent a letter regarding the transfer of detention type from the detention centre to home, which was granted by the KPK. After receiving sharp criticism from various parties, on Monday, 23 March 2026, the KPK decided to return Yaqut to the detention centre.
