Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has declared its support for the deliberation of the Asset Forfeiture Bill by the government and the House of Representatives (DPR).

“The presence of this regulation will be a strategically significant step forward in strengthening the legal framework for combating criminal acts of corruption, particularly to ensure the optimisation of state financial loss recovery,” said KPK Spokesperson Budi Prasetyo to journalists in Jakarta on Sunday.

He explained that the KPK supports the Asset Forfeiture Bill because, in practice, the anti-corruption body’s law enforcement efforts have not only been oriented towards imposing custodial sentences on corruption offenders, but also towards recovering state financial losses as an integral part of the criminal justice system.

“The forfeiture of assets derived from criminal acts serves as an important instrument for creating a deterrent effect, because offenders not only lose their freedom but also lose the economic benefits obtained from their crimes,” he said.

Furthermore, he stated that without an effective mechanism for seizing the proceeds of corruption, eradication efforts risk failing to address the core motive — namely, financial gain.

For this reason, he said the KPK hopes the Asset Forfeiture Bill can strengthen the “follow the money” approach, or the tracing of assets suspected of originating from acts of corruption.

“With comprehensive regulation, state asset recovery efforts can be carried out more swiftly, measurably, and accountably,” he said.

Moreover, he added, the KPK views the ratification of the Asset Forfeiture Bill as complementing existing anti-corruption legal provisions and the synergy between law enforcement agencies already in place.

“Ultimately, the overarching objective is to ensure that every rupiah seized from corrupt practices can be returned for the greatest benefit of the public and national development,” he said.

Previously, Commission III of the DPR commenced deliberations on the formation of the Asset Forfeiture Bill on 15 January 2026. The bill will consist of 8 chapters and 62 articles.

On 10 February 2026, Commission III of the DPR stated that there are four priority bills for discussion this year, one of which is the Asset Forfeiture Bill.
